Rákóczi Linden Tree

Süttő

Süttõ is a nationally known natural asset, the most beautiful jewel of the village, the 420-year-old linden tree with its small leaves, standing next to the Rákóczi Ferenc road running parallel to the Danube, is an impressive phenomenon with its canopy descending to the ground. In the shade of the tree, a quarry was still in operation in 1890, and as a result the soil around the tree contains a lot of stone debris. The tree was and still is held in high esteem by the people of Süttõ. A fenced park has been created around the tree. In 1926, a pyramid-shaped World War I heroic monument, donated by quarry owner Ernõ Müller, was erected and planted with a number of pine saplings approximating the number of fallen heroes. Later, a memorial to the victims of the Second World War was erected, depicting an angel. Its dimensions are monumental: the circumference is 6.3 m, the main trunk 1.60 m high, the crown 12-14 m high, the diameter of the canopy 20-25 m, and it supports a canopy of about 1000-1400 m3.
